How to convert a sweep solid model (attached here) to sheet metal.
Any body can try with attached part file and can attach the solution as a reply here…

The revolved part cannot be converted to a sheet metal part within SolidWorks. Firstly it would need to be split so that it could be unwrapped, and secondly that would involve plastic deformation of the material … which SW cannot handle.

The exceptions to that being the Lofted Bend and the Edge Flange on a curved edge.

Some Gold Partner companies (like BlankWorks) may be able to compute the curved to flat shape.

maybe Ben can chime in on this one because I have seen him turn some incredibly complex shapes into flat patterns. If I remember how he did it, it involved using surfaces. I believe he is traveling for the next 2 days but im sure he will be checking the jott. Maybe he could do a video on this because it is sure a handy thing to know.

As Dave said I am traveling (well done now) and I am taking a day off to hang with the family. Ill see if there is anything that can be done. First question based on the answers here so far. Does it need to be one uninterrupted shape or can it have rips or cuts along the circumference and welded in the end? or are you looking for a stamped part?

you can take a uniform hollow cylinder as an solid model and try to convert it to sheetmetal…and you must have a cut or rip along the circumference…….

Here is my Style for converting sweep solid model to sheet metal… Let me know if it works for you and for the Shop works…. there are a lot of ways but that is all for now..

Thanks behnt for the last advise about spherical to sheet metal. I think Lofting is the best way on it.Attachment – sweep-to-sheet-metal

I am designing a mug and would like to “engrave” a pattern into a revolved model. How can I take an organic pattern (ie curves, lines, etc), wrap it around the revolved model and then cut extrude (or other) into the mug so that it appears engraved? Thanks in advance.

Look up emboss or deboss in the help menu. Basically put the sketch on a plane that could wrap around the cylinder and choose the emboss/deboss function and choose if you want it to be indented or raised.

Thank you. My plane had not been tangent therefore the feature did not work. I have figured it out.
      Thanks again

the feature is called wrap. You would sketch on a plane that shares the cups axis and use that sketch with the wrap feature. You will have three options: scribe, emboss or deboss. It should work for you. The other option is to do it with a piecce of sheetmetal but it depends on the shape of your cup. There is always a way!

Does any one out there have a good mothod for modeling swages in the weldment tool?

If you could leave a screen-grab or a Solidworks file showing the shape of the swage that you want, someone will probably be able to help you.
