    Change color of a surface

Public discussion by Chris Williams, posted courtesy of Vuuch.

How do you change the color of a single surface in a part file? I am modeling an assembly in a single part just to get an idea of what I want to do. I want to color surfaces to define parts.

Right click on the surface and then click the beach ball (appearances) in the dialog that comes up. Then choose face and color apporpriately.

Alternately if you have the task pane displayed (right hand side of the window, there are tabs with icons like a house etc etc) click on the beach ball and then navigate to the appearance you want and drag and drop it on the face and a dialog comes up asking if you want it on the face, boss, body etc etc…

    Bagger Design

Public discussion by Chris Williams, posted courtesy of Vuuch.

I’m working on a design for a new custom hardtail bagger and it looks like I will use these bags from Redneck Engineering (http://www.redneckengineering.com/bad_ass_bagger.htm). I started with the idea to use the Redneck bagger kit but have moved onto a different idea. The plan now is to use the Joker frame from American Motor Cycle (http://highly-dangerous.com/index3.htm) and turn it into a bagger. I put up a site at http://www.hardtailbagger.com where you can follow the entire process. My Proe skills are better than my SW skills which creates a problem. All the CAD parts I get are in SW. But my conceptual model is in Proe. Proe has this great feature, merge by referance. What it allows you to do is create a single part that represents the finished product. Then you merge this into other part files for each part and cut away what you do not want. What is cool is as you change that concpet part each specific part then changes. I should create a little video about this. I would love to know if there is a way to do this in SW?

    Use Edge Of Model

Public discussion by Chris Williams, posted courtesy of Vuuch.

I am working on a mold for a fiberglass part and in the next feature I create I want to select edges of the model to be part of that feature. How do you do this? In Proe what I would do is say select edge while making my feature and model geometry becomes part of the sketch for the feature. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this in SW.

One thing I tried that seems to work but I am not confident is the correct approach is to create an offset edge with a value of zero (0).

Use the Convert Entities tool in a new feature sketch
      -or-
      Use the Move Face tool

Beta help! We need people who are brave, want to be more productive and use SolidWorks to use the new Vuuch beta. The feedback we are getting is great. We want people to use the beta and tell us what new features are needed. You can download the add-in at http://www.vuuch.com/download/solidworks. Ben thanks for letting me post this here.

Wanted to test if the public discussions at vuuch.net were being fed to herd.solidworksheard.com.

It looks like Twitterfeed is slow today. I was having some issues logging in today. I checked the feed to make sure all the settings were right. Everything checked out and it was posting on Friday.

why should I use Solidworks over Proe?

    • behnt 7:33 am on November 26, 2008 Permalink

I have had very little experience in ProE so I could not tell you. I believe Matt Lombard has covered this in his blog at http://DezignStuff.com/blog and you should Google this to see what comes up. Ill try and encourage more people to respond to this that have more experience but I cannot promise anything though…

I haven't personally used ProE and cannot comment on it's functionality, but you can refer to bagsas' post on November 25, 2008.
SolidWorks has a great user community who bend over backwards to help other users with potential issues.
Oh, and SolidWorks World is a blast!

a few words for why SolidWorks:
      Easy
      Powerful
      Fast
      Cheap
      Great support
      LOADS of information-videos-resources!!!
This is the cutting edge of Design

      SolidWorks over Pro/E?

I would say ease of use and price.

      Pro/E over SolidWorks?

I would say level of control, and large assembly performance.

There is a lot to consider when trying to decide which CAD program you want to focus on. Are you wanting to get a job with a major corporation with facilities around the world, or a small to mid size company? I have found that companies like Caterpillar and Graco exclusivly use ProE, and I have also heard that a lot of other ProE houses are re-evaluating their ProE use as most of thier vendors and customers use SW as it is a more economical solution for the small to mid size companies. Just my .02.
